Foreign Culture In Malaysia

Kitsch

This is the Shah Alam Stadium. The stadium is actually applying the culture of Greek and bit of Roman. Its in an oval shape. During old times in Greece, people build an oval-like shape building and named it as theater.  They used the theater for many functions such as performances and sporting purposes. Nowadays, the stadium is also used for events like performances and also sporting. The purpose of adding this culture in the building is to show that it is more classic and is more easy for the spectators to view the events going on.

This is the picture of the golf club in Kuching, Sarawak. The building is clearly applying the Egyptian culture by using the pyramid-shape. The designer of this building change a bit on the design of the pyramid. He took of the bottom part of the pyramid and made it overlapping. So it apparently seems like two pyramid overlapping over one another; one standing above the another one.The designer added this element in the building and the purpose is to show that the people in the golf club is protected by God because during old times in Egypt, the people thinks that the pyramid is the house of the Gods. The pyramid is a triangular-shaped building which the top is pointing towards the sky which is believed to be pointing towards the Sun which is the God, Amun-Ra (creator of Sun). People nowadays believed that if we build a building like the pyramid-shaped like, Amun-Ra will protect us with his holy powers which shines over us, the innocent human beings.

The building in this picture is the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange Building. From this building i noticed that the building has Doric columns as design in it. Doric column is origin from the Greek culture. Malaysian took the idea of the Doric column and apply with their own specific design in it. The windows of the building are mostly embedded behind the Doric columns. Using the Doric columns can show that the building is a classical design and with the colour of brown, it also brings up more feeling about classic.

In this picture shown that the windows and the pillar have Greek culture in it. The pillar shown is a Corinthian pillar which this kind of pillar are usually shown in Colosseum during Greek era. The Corinthian is one of the three classical architecture of Greek. Malaysian applied this technique in the building to give and show more on the classic of the building. With the Corinthian order, the building will look more higher class and will impress the view of the audiences. The windows of this building are also applying the Greek architecture culture. The glasses of the windows are embedded into the skele of the windows which are the racks. This shows a bit of mysteriousity.

This picture clearly showing a stone fence wall of a particular house. The piling of the fence wall is probably using the doric column technique but without something supporting behind the fence wall. Doric column are usually apply on fence wall and windows to show the classical taste of the architecture on the building. Malaysian likes to imply this type of technique is because they like to have more classical taste like the Greeks. This type of architecture also apply the Kitsch technique which is repetition of the doric column.

Definition of Kitsch (wikipedia-Kitsch)
Kitsch is a form of art that is considered an inferior, tasteless copy of an extant style of art or a worthless imitation of art of recognized value. The concept is associated with the deliberate use of elements that may be thought of as cultural icons while making cheap mass-produced objects that are unoriginal. Kitsch also refers to the types of art that are aesthetically deficient (whether or not being sentimental, glamorous, theatrical, or creative) and that make creative gestures which merely imitate the superficial appearances of art through repeated conventions and formulae. Excessive sentimentality often is associated with the term.
The contemporary definition of kitsch is considered derogatory, denoting works executed to pander to popular demand alone and purely for commercial purposes rather than works created as self-expression by an artist. The term is generally reserved for unsubstantial and gaudy works that are calculated to have popular appeal and are considered pretentious and shallow rather than genuine artistic efforts.
The concept of kitsch is applied to artwork that was a response to the 19th century art with aesthetics that convey exaggerated sentimentality and melodrama, hence, kitsch art is closely associated with sentimental art.

Lao Zhi

History Man Image

According to legends, Laozi leaves China on hiswater buffalo.

Lao zhi is a mystic philosopher of ancient China. He is the best known as the author of the "Tao Te Ching"His association with the "Tao Te Ching" has led him to be traditionally considered the founder of Taoism. We call Lao zhi as "Taishang Laojun", or "One of the Three Pure Ones" because he most religious forms of the Taoist religion. Lao zhi translated literally from Chinese means "old master", and is generally considered honorific. According to Chinese tradition, Lao zhi lived in the 6th century BCE.

IMO: I think Lao Zhi is a scared and great people in our chinese races. His most famous book "Tao Te Ching" has teach us the truth about how to become a good people. Beside that, He is founder of Taoism, Taoism as a religion to help people and teach them the truth.

Mithuna Yaksha & Yakshi

Yaksha & Yakshi
Description
Now, this two sculpture that I want to discuss, it names Yaksha which is put at right side, and Yakshi which is put at left side. The first one I want to discuss is Yaksha, he is name of a broad class of nature-spirits. Yaksha and Yakshi are caretakers of the natural treasures hidden in the earth and tree roots. They are appear in the India, Jain, and Buddhist mythology. From the research, I got it show that he has a dual personality in Hindu, Jain, and Buddhist mythology. In other hand, he is an in good natural-god who is associated with woods and mountains;in another hand, he is a bad dark-evil like a kinds of ghost that called bhuta who is hunts the travelers. In Indian art, the indian artist draw the male yaksha as a fearsome warriors, the female yakshi as a beautiful young women. The another one I want to discuss is Yakshi. She is the counterpart of the male Yaksha. .Yakshi is often describes as a beatiful young woman. Althought Yakshi are kindly but there are also Yakshi as a malignancy characteristics in Indian folklore.

IMO: In my religion's buddhist mythology, the Yaksha is most describe as a ghost who is a hideous and malevolent spirit to eat people and can fly at the sky and can hide to hunt people. But I believe that Yaksha has dual personality because our buddhism believe that Yaksha is god and he also is a evil if Yaksha do wrong things to the people. Next, I found that in Indian, Buddhist, Jain, they all think Yakshi is a beautiful woman because she is the god look kindly and peacefully.

The Creation of Adam

Michelangelo's 'Creation of Adam', Sistine chapel ceiling in Vatican Museums.
Description
The Creation of Adam is a painting of Michelangelo's fresco Sistine Chapel ceiling 1511 years. It is take to illustrates from the Binlical story from the Book of Genesis in which God the Father breathes life into Adam, the first man come to the new world.

In the painting, the man who is the Adam is painted at the right side of the painting, he is naked, body shows more muscular, looks feel relax, laening against rock, and giving his to old man. Next, the old man in the painting who is the God of father, he is surrounded by angels, covered by white silk-robe and he also has a white bearded. In addition, there are more angels surrounded to the God of father, they are holding the God and one of the angel is covered with a green cloth. There also has a big dark red cloak cover around the God and angels.

Through to the painting, we dont know why two of them giving their finger pointing each other, is that meaning of this proportion to them? So, through the research show that many artist explain the God of Father is giving the new life to the Adam because Adam looks like no soul inside the body. So, Adam is giving out his finger to receive the new life giving from the God.

Last but not least, there are some element shows in the painting. The first one is line, it shows organic line for curve to the human figure outline, mountain, and clothing of God.The is organic, it shows organic shape for the human figure such as body of Adam, God of Father, and angels. Next is colours, it shows warm and cool colours. The cool colours are blue, white, and green. The warm colours are dark red which is shoes the big cloak cover around by children and the God. The fourth is texture, it shows simulated texture which is imitate to the muscular shape because it is looks realistic. Last one is value, it shows are 3D value and high key value. The 3D value is the muscular shape and shadow shows more 3D. The high key shows bright colours which is white, red, and beige.

Liberty Leading the People
Description
Liberty Leading the People is a painting by Eugene Delacroix. This painting is painted to commemorate the July Revolution of 1830 years, which is toppled Charles X of France. In the painting, we see that a woman as a personifying to liberty leads the people forward over the dead bodies, she use her right hands to hold the tricolore flag of the French Revolution and her another hands hold a bayoneted musket. This painting is the one famous painting painted from the artist, Eugene Delacroix. Delacroix used the painting like a political poster for the revolution. Then, he was a member of the National Gaurd. When he painted, he placed himself into the painting as the man who is painted on the left side of the painting and wearing a black top-hat. So, we see that painting is shows that the heroic poses of the people fighting for their liberty. This painting also shows that the struggle of the people fight for their liberty, and allows the viewer to empathize the struggle of the fighting war.

Kroisos Kousos

Anavyssos Kouros, ca. 530 BC.

Description
This is the another sculpture I will discuss, It name's Kroisos Kousos (Ancient Greek). It is a marble sculpture from Anavyssos in Attica. This sculpture is dated within c. 540 - 515 BC and stands 1.95m high. This sculpture is now located in National Archaeological Museum of Athens. It is functioned as a grave marker for the fallen warrior who is names Kroisos. We look to this sculpture proportion, we see that it is free standing, both of its hand is put freely and stiffly at both its side, and its face looks a little bit of "archaic smile". From the research shows that the inscription on the base of the statue reads: "Stop and show pity beside the marker of Kroisos, dead, whom once in battle's front rank raging Ares destroyed.“

This sculpture is thought more represent to a ideal image of a person because it is represent more looks like the Kroisos than a actual potrait drawing. It also build up as a fact that it is displays in an ancient Greece status for the common man.

IMO: I think the artist of this sculpture is very admiration to the brave warrior. The dead of brave warrior let the artist feel sad and the artist make a sculpture to represent him to let all people to remember the brave of the warrior. I see that this sculpture shows more muscular that represent the warrior how he strong.
